Meera Bai

           Meera Bai

Meera Bai was a 16th century bhakti saint. She was one of the greatest devotees of Krishna. She was a Rajput princess born in 1498 in Marwar(Chittor) region of Rajasthan. Her father was Raja Ratan Singh and mother was Veera Kumari. During her childhood, Meera was given education of various skills. When Meera was 4 years old, she watched a wedding procession, she saw the groom and asked her mother, "Who is my groom?" Her mother tried to make her understand that she was too small to choose a groom.

At last, Meera's mother handed her lord Krishna's idol and said, "Here, he, who enchants everyone, this Shyamsunder,He is your groom!" Meera took the idol with her and placed it in her room. From then, she considered Krishna as her husband.

Her mother died after 3 years. Meera grew up as a beautiful, soft-spoken Princess. She was also a brilliant singer. Her beauty and fame spread widely. Every prince wanted to marry her. But Meera's heart longed only for her Shyam.

In 1516, Rana Sangha, king of Mewar, asked Meera's hand for his son, Yuvraj Rana Kumbha. But Meera could not even think of marrying someone other than Shyam. But she couldn't disobey her father, grandfather, uncle and aunt. So she agreed. At the age of 18, in 1516 she was married to Rana Kumbha. She took her idol and went to Mewar. Rana Kumbha was a nice and respectful husband. He never stopped Meera. After fulfilling her duties as a queen, Meera would go to the nearby Krishna temple and sang bhajans. But her mother in law and other ladies didn't like it.

They forced her to worship only Maa Bhavani (Parvati) who was principle deity of the family. But Meera told them that she couldn't leave her Shyamsunder. The ladies of the palace started planning conspiracies against her. Her Sister-in law told a lie to Rana Kumbha that Meera had extra marital affair with someone whom she met daily at the temple. Rana Kumbha, got angry and ran with a sword for Meera. When he reached the temple, he saw Meera. He shouted at her and asked her about her lover. Meera said, "This, Makhan chor, Nandlaal is the one who stole my heart." His relative told Rana Kumbha the truth that Meera is a great devotee and is pure and pious like Ganga. Kumbha realised the truth and felt sorry for his hasty behaviour with Meera.
